In the spirit of International Women’s Day on the 8th of March, parkrun has launched a global campaign aiming to break down many of the barriers faced by women and girls with the goal of inspiring them to come to parkrun.
Women make up 54% of parkrun registrations yet they are less likely than men to actually participate in parkrun events, especially on an ongoing basis. The fear of not being fit enough, of being ‘too slow’, of not having volunteered before, of coming on your own or uncertainty about what to expect are just some of the barriers that people face, especially women and girls.
Kiwanis parkrun will therefore host a special event on the day before IWD and we would love you to join in the celebrations by bringing along a female friend, colleague or family member. We hope to have as many women and girls as possible participating with us as walkers, joggers and runners on the day, and everyone is encouraged to wear something to fit with our purple dress code.
parkrun is for everyone, no matter your age, background, fitness level or gender. And although #IWDparkrun is being held on one day, it is hoped that the impact will be far more long-lasting, so if you can’t join us on the 7th of March, no worries! Come and join us on any other Saturday! Remember, parkrun is free, it’s fun and it’s for everyone.
