Statement on the Act of Arson at Proposed Site for Atlohsa’s Planned Indigenous Winter Shelter

Colonialism isn’t just our history, it’s our present. Last week, arson took place at the proposed site for Atlohsa’s planned Indigenous winter shelter. “The message behind this act of violence is clear: Indigenous people were not wanted at this site,” said a statement issued from Atlohsa Family Healing Services. Anova is saddened and angered to learn about this hate-motivated crime targeted at our community’s most vulnerable. There is work to be done to end anti-Indigenous racism and violence in our community.

Anova believes in a future without violence. We stand together in support of Atlohsa Family Healing Services in their call for commitment to safe spaces for Indigenous people experiencing homelessness and an end to anti-Indigenous racism. We encourage those who are able to show their support by making a gift to Atlohsa Family Healing Services here.
